Original:
The HG 4/4 708 is one of those locomotives with a fascinating history. It was built in 1930 by SLM in Winterthur. It then went to the former French railway company Compagnie Générale des Colonies de Paris, and on to Indochina, now Vietnam. Armed conflict there put an end to its service. Its fate seemed sealed. However, enthusiasts from the ‘Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke’ association in Switzerland remembered the cogwheel locomotive, as they needed to procure rolling stock for the Furka mountain line. In 1990, they succeeded in bringing the locomotive and its sister unit, the HG 4/4 704, back to Switzerland. The 704 has already been in service for several years. It was rebuilt at the steam locomotive workshop in Uzwil. The 708 was also completely overhauled there until 2023 and put into service with the DFB in the summer of 2024. From the 2025 summer season onwards, it will run on the spectacular mountain route.
