The new Shay steam locomotive marks the arrival of a truly extraordinary chapter in locomotive history in the fascinating world of model railways.
Since 1873, the powerful Shay steam locomotives have been thrilling enthusiasts with their revolutionary technology – by 1945, around 2,770 of these robust machines had been built to deliver maximum traction even on rough, steep and winding tracks. Originally designed to work in remote forest areas and in mining where conventional locomotives failed, they effortlessly negotiated gradients of up to 10% and tight curves. The Western Maryland Railway used the 136-tonne Shay No. 5, which was later replaced by the even more impressive Shay No. 6. Today, it still carries tourists through the rugged mountains of West Virginia. These steam locomotives combine adventure and technical sophistication – a fascinating chapter in industrial engineering that continues to inspire today.

Role model:

US Shay-type steam locomotive, Class D. Version with 4 driving bogies. Drive via crankshafts on drive shafts and via bevel gears on the bogies. With characteristic left-offset boiler. Mainly used on American field and forest railways, on routes with tight curves and steep gradients. Western Maryland locomotive number 5. Operating condition of the 1940s.
