Obwohl die Entwicklung der Spitzdachwagen der Gattung F schon auf die Dreißigerjahre zurückgeht, waren die Wagen auch viele Jahrzehnte später in großer Anzahl in ganz Europa im Einsatz. Die vor dem zweiten Weltkrieg hochmodernen Wagen waren, nicht zuletzt durch ihre zugelassenen Höchstgeschwindigkeit von bis 120 km/h, auch in der Epoche IV noch den gestellten Aufgaben gewachsen.
